The threat to commit a crime is governed by Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 275 Sections 2-4. It is a misdemeanour with a maximum punishment of six months imprisonment.
A threat to commit a crime against a person or another’s property both fall under this statute. A key feature of the crime is not only conveying the threat to a specific person, but also having circumstances such that the person could reasonably believe that the threatener had the intent and means to carry out the threat.
